Unaccompanied Minor and Young Passenger
A young passenger (YNGP) is a passenger aged between 12 and 15 years.
Important Information
- The information below applies for travel on Qantas operated and marketed flights as well as flights operated by Alliance Airlines and Finnair under a wet lease agreement .
- There is no limit to the number of UMNRs or YNGPs that can be accepted on Qantas flights. Some caps apply to wet lease flights operated by Alliance Airlines and Finnair.
- Transfers to/from other airlines’ flights is NOT permitted.
- Refer your customer to Unaccompanied Minors for further information on children travelling alone.

Qantas NDC offers a seamless integrated capability when shopping to book and sell Unaccompanied Minors and pay for the Supervision Fee.

General Information
Eligibility and Booking Unaccompanied Minors
Most fares require the adult level to be applied for unaccompanied minors, please check the Child Discount paragraph in the conditions of the fare. Normal fare rules apply for changes and cancellations.
Add required entry codes to the booking and accept payment of a supervision fee via EMD
Young Passengers:
Add YNGP OSI codes to the booking to ensure the child is identifiable to crew in the event of a delay or disruption. No additional service is provided.

Qantas does not accept unaccompanied minor bookings for:
- Children aged 4 years or under for domestic flights.
- Children aged 5 years or under for international flights.
- Children who require medication but are unable to self-administer or do not have a supporting letter from their doctor.
- Qantas codeshare and other airline flights.
- Flight that include an overnight stopover or is the last flight of the day, except for routes where only one flight operates daily.
- Connecting flights from different airports in the same city.
- Transit times when any two connecting flights are more than four hours.
- Connection flights to/from another airline.
Travelling to and from Australia
If a child aged fourteen (14) years old or younger is travelling without a parent or legal guardian, such as travelling as part of a school group, Australian Border Force (ABF) may require documentation providing consent for the child to travel.
This letter needs to state:
- Child's full name
- Gender
- Place and date of birth
- Passport information
- Purpose of the child travelling
- Travel itinerary
- Details of the accompanying adult including full name and passport details
The letter should be signed by the parent/s or legal guardian and witnessed by a public official. The original letter must be carried by the child and/or accompanying adults and presented on request by ABF on arrival in, or departure from, Australia.
Travelling to and from USA
All unaccompanied minors (under 12 years) and young passengers under 15 years travelling to/from the USA require:
- A parent or guardian to drop them off at the Qantas departure ports; and
- A main contact nominated by the parent/guardian to pick them up at the Qantas arrival port.
Travelling to and from South Africa
The Republic of South African government requires specific travel documents for Unaccompanied Minors to be available for presentation on arrival into and departure from South Africa.

Supervision Fees
For tickets issued on/after 1 July 2026, the unaccompanied minor supervision fee has increased as outlined below:
Pre-Travel
The following supervision fees apply per unaccompanied minor in each direction when pre-purchased:
On/before 30 June 2026:

- A$55.00 when purchased via QF NDC or QF Direct
- A$60.00 when purchased via the GDS (EDIFACT)
On/after 1 July 2026:

- A$100

- A$60.00 when purchased via QF NDC or QF Direct
- A$65.00 when purchased via the GDS (EDIFACT)
The supervision fee EMD receipt must be provided to your customer as this is required by Qantas staff on the day of travel.
At the Airport
The following supervision fees apply per unaccompanied minor for international travel when paid on departure at the airport:
- International travel:
- A$180.00
- Australian domestic travel:
- A$110.00
Pre-Travel
- A supervision fee of A$50 for each Australian domestic flight and A$90 for each international flight applies per unaccompanied minor in each direction if pre-purchased.
- The supervision fee EMD receipt must be provided to your customer as this is required by Qantas staff on the day of travel.
At the Airport
- A service fee of A$100 for domestic and A$180 for international travel applies per unaccompanied minor if the supervision fee is paid on departure at the airport.
Booking Changes and Cancellations
- If the flights are changing, the supervision fee can be transferred to the new flights. Please contact Qantas Contact Centres for assistance.
- The supervision fee is refundable through BSPlink if the ticket is completely unused.
Young Passengers and Unaccompanied Minors
- Young passengers travelling with unaccompanied minors in the same booking are unable to be seated together and supervised by Qantas staff both at the airport and in-flight unless they also pay the unaccompanied minor supervision fee.
- If the parents would like all children to stay together for the entire journey, the unaccompanied minor supervision fee will need to be collected for each child.
Additional Information
Children Travelling with Medications
- Please ensure Qantas is notified of any medical, dietary or special requirements for the unaccompanied minor by including on the documentation.
- Medication is considered as any prescription medicine from a doctor or dentist, or medicine from a pharmacist or over the counter. A letter from the child's doctor will need to be provided for medication to be carried on-board, including Adrenalin Auto Injector and Ventolin inhalers.

Parents and Children Travelling in Separate Cabins
- If the parent or guardian is travelling in a different cabin from their children, the children will be considered unaccompanied minors.
Seat Selection and Pre-purchase Additional Baggage
- Additional baggage and advance seat selection for unaccompanied minors is not available for pre-purchase.
Your Customer's Booking
Required Documentation
The following documentation is required before the unaccompanied minor can be accepted on-board:
- Completed Unaccompanied Minor Form form available online for both Australian domestic and international travel, completed and printed by the Parent/Guardian prior to check-in
- EMD receipt for the supervision fee
- Ticket or itinerary receipt
- Boarding pass
- UMNR badge attached to the UMNR's clothing (provided by the airport)
- For international travel, a valid passport as well as applicable visas and arrival documentation, if required
- A doctor's letter if medication is carried on-board
Main Contact Responsibilities
The main contact is responsible to:
- Drop-off / pick-up the unaccompanied minor with Qantas staff
- Notify the check-in agent the child is travelling unaccompanied and hand over the completed Qantas unaccompanied minor documentation and EMD receipt
- Provide Photo Identification matching the name given to Qantas on the documentation or two forms of Non-Photo Identification where there is no access to photo ID due to specific state limitations
- Remain at the airport until the flight has taken off and is in the air
- Be available by telephone at any time, without delay, while the child is in Qantas' care
Please allow additional time at check-in when documentation is being completed on arrival at the airport. If this is not completed correctly, the child may be transferred to the next available flight or may not be able to travel if this is the last flight of the day.
For travel to/from the USA, the child's parent or guardian must always be present when delivering the child to the airport.
Airport and Inflight Experience
Australian Domestic Check-in
- Minimum of 1 hour prior to departure where the parent/guardian will be advised the time to meet a Qantas cabin crew member at the applicable departure gate.
International Check-in
- Minimum of 2 hours prior to departure where the parent/guardian will be advised the time to meet a Qantas ground staff representative who will be escorting the child through Customs and Immigration to the departure gate.
- This includes Australian Domestic flights departing from an International Terminal.
Airport Security
- Unaccompanied minros are subject to the same security screenings, which may include the use of body scanners and quarantine procedures as other passengers.
Inflight
- During the flight, the child will be seated close to cabin crew who will regularly check on the child.
Arrival
- The child will be assisted with arrival procedures by Qantas staff. Qantas cabin crew will deliver the child to the nominated parent/guardian who must provide photo identification as verification of their identity.

A supervision fee is to be collected in each direction, payable upon issuing the ticket.
