Airbus A350 Project Sunrise Hub
The Project Sunrise journey
In 2017, Qantas announced plans to take on the final frontier of aviation: non-stop flights from the East Coast of Australia to London and New York.[*], under the codename 'Project Sunrise'.
The Airbus A350-1000ULR was chosen, and 12 aircraft were ordered in May 2022.
The A350 will operate more non-stop routes to Australia, with a significantly shorter point-to-point travel time – reducing flight time up to four hours compared to the flight time of one-stop flights.
The first aircraft, named Vega, will be delivered in April 2027*. In addition, we'll be receiving 12 A350-1000LRs from FY28 as part of the Project Fysh announcement in August 2023.
From October 2027, Qantas will operate daily non-stop flights between Sydney and London, with tickets going on sale in February 2027, leading the way in ultra long‑haul travel.

Vega to fly again: Our first Airbus A350-1000ULR
In 1943, a Catalina flying boat named Vega flew from Perth across the Indian Ocean in radio silence. Just three passengers, 69 kg of mail, and a crew navigating by stars to keep Australia's lifeline to the world open when every other route had been cut off.
More than 80 years later, Vega returns as the name of our first Project Sunrise A350‑1000ULR, named after the wartime Catalina and the navigational star its crews tracked across the Indian Ocean.
