A journey of impact: Qantas and UNICEF visit Indonesia
Earlier last month, Daniel Telo, Customer Service Supervisor, Shelly Forster, Flight Attendant and Nick Bull, Head of International Cabin Crew, travelled to Indonesia alongside UNICEF Australia CEO Tony Stuart and UNICEF Australia CMO Libby Hodgson to witness firsthand the outcomes of this enduring partnership.
The group visited health centres providing critical immunisations and nutrition support, schools delivering education on online safety and digital wellbeing, and youth empowerment programs such as Skills4Girls.
"The most eye-opening moment for me was hearing from the UNICEF team in Jakarta," said Daniel Telo, Customer Service Supervisor. "Before this trip, I knew UNICEF did incredible work - but I hadn't realised just how far-reaching it is. Learning that Indonesia has nearly 80 million children, with more than 10 million living in poverty, really put things into perspective."
A standout moment for many came during their visit to a youth centre, where participants broke into small groups and heard firsthand stories from the young people involved.
"One particular boy really touched my heart," said Shelly Forster, Flight Attendant. "He shared how he copes with anxiety through art and even gave me one of his drawings to keep. That moment filled my eyes with tears and reminded me why this partnership truly matters."
Over the decades, Qantas has supported UNICEF through funding, advocacy, and staff engagement. The Indonesia trip not only highlighted the real-world results of that support - it inspired renewed passion among the crew to spread awareness of the Change for Good program onboard and beyond.
